U.S. citizens can sponsor their immediate relatives for U.S. permanent resident status. This includes: spouse of U.S. citizen, unmarried children of U.S. citizen who are under 21, and parents of U.S. citizen who is over 21. The sponsored relative only waits the time it takes the government to process the visa application with no additional backlog.
Other family members can be sponsored for U.S. permanent resident status, but they will need to wait until they get to the front of the line to finish the U.S. permanent resident process. These include: children of U.S. citizens who are over 21 years old, spouses and children of U.S. permanent residents, and siblings of U.S. citizens.
