The challenges of the current administration’s immigration policies are undeniable, but I’m grateful to share an inspiring win.
Recently, I took on a couple of pro bono immigration court cases, including one through the incredible Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project. This case, in particular, stood out. The young mother's case had strong facts in our favor and a solid chance of approval.
But in immigration law, nothing is ever guaranteed.
The timeline was tight. I had only a few weeks to prepare and file materials before the court deadline.
Since the hearing was scheduled at a pivotal moment---just days before Trump’s inauguration when impending policy changes could have jeopardized the client's case---I did not dare ask for a continuance to get more time to prepare.
Thankfully, the government attorney on the other side was fair and sympathetic to the client's case, and the judge granted asylum—a life-changing result for my client and her family.
Now, we’re navigating applications for her husband and children, a process made even more complex by shifting policies.
The road ahead won’t be easy, but I’m committed to continuing this work---supporting society's most vulnerable--whenever I can.
