A Conversation with Students About Building a Legal Career and a Life

Before my Passover break, I spoke with UCI’s Women in Law Association.
One surprising topic sparked the most interest:
How do you build a legal career and raise a family?
Most of these undergraduate students hadn’t started a family yet, but the question was clearly on their minds. They wanted to know if it’s possible and how people actually make it work.
I shared how I’ve navigated that balance, and that while it’s not always easy, it is possible.
Their interest made me realize how much our profession needs more open conversations around this topic.
I was also struck by how much my own career path resonated with students. What I thought was an ordinary journey into immigration law felt meaningful to them.It reminded me that sometimes one story is all it takes to open up a new path.
Thank you to UCI’s Women in Law Association and Zainab Husain for creating space for these conversations and to the students who came with thoughtful questions.
