How Filmmakers Can Strengthen Their O-1 Eligibility

FILMMAKERS: If you're working toward an O-1, there are two criteria you might not realize are separate.

One is serving in a critical role for distinguished productions or events. That's the one everyone thinks about. The films, the series, the credits.

But there's a second criteria that I think a lot of people don't realize exists separately.

Serving in a critical role for distinguished organizations or establishments.

That's not about the project. That's about the company.

So if you worked on a well-known production, that can help you meet one criteria. And if that production was made by a distinguished production company where you played an important role, that can help you meet a second criteria.

Two separate criteria. Same job, potentially.

But if you're working on independent projects where there isn't really a company behind it, then you might be able to argue the production criteria, but there's nothing there for the organization criteria.

I think it's just helpful for people to be aware that these are two different things. Because when you understand that, it might change how you think about the opportunities you pursue.

Not just: is this a good project to work on?

But also: is there an organization here where my role could be significant?

It's something to keep in mind, especially if you're trying to build toward an O-1 over time. Thinking about both of those criteria, not just one, can make a difference when it's time to put your case together.
